Dr Soteris Demetriou is an Associate Professor of Computer Systems Security at the Department of Computing at Imperial College London and the Director of the Applications, Platforms, and Systems Security research lab (APSS). He is also the Director of Imperial’s Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR).
His interests lie in the security, privacy, and safety of machine learning models and computer systems. By analyzing operating systems, networking protocols, machine learning models and side-channels his work has uncovered design flaws, leading to severe security exploits and privacy leakages on the Android operating system, Amazon services, commodity IoT devices and 3D object detectors among others, affecting millions of users. In response, his work has introduced tools, methods, and end-to-end systems to improve end-user privacy and strengthen security on mobile and cyber-physical systems. These include tools using code analysis and instrumentation, natural language processing and machine learning for detecting mobile applications’ privacy leakage, security enhancements for the Android OS, fine-grained access control for smart-home IoT devices by combining network and mobile application information and a framework which leverages trusted computing principles to preserve the privacy of machine learning models on resource constrained devices, among others. Dr Demetriou has fostered collaborations between more than 40 researchers across 9 institutions in both industry and academia.
Dr Demetriou’s work appeared multiple times in top international systems security conferences such as NDSS and ACM CCS but also in other systems and sensing conferences such as Usenix OSDI, ACM SOSP, IEEE Infocom, ACM MobiSys, ACM SenSys, Interspeech, and IROS. His work received prestigious awards, including a distinguished paper award at NDSS (‘18). His mobile systems security work is also close to practice and resulted in relevant patents. Dr Demetriou also worked closely with Meta (Core Systems) on large scale distributed computing problems.
